Foundations

University education must provide students in all majors with the tools to embark on a lifetime of learning. Common Curriculum Foundations courses assure that students read and write, think critically, and possess basic awareness of the multi-faceted nature of our complex world.

Because these skills are essential for a successful college experience, Foundations should be completed within a student’s first four terms of enrollment.

Writing & Reasoning Requirement

All students who enroll at SMU in Fall 2020 or later are required to complete the two semester Writing and Reasoning sequence, which includes WRTR 1312 - Introduction to Academic Writing and WRTR 1313 - Critical Writing.

Students entering as first-year students (with 0-23 of post-high school transfer hours) must take both WRTR 1312 and WRTR 1313 at SMU, regardless of whether they have prior credit from AP/IB exams, or transfer credit.

Transfer students (those who have studied at another institution for at least one regular term and who transfer in at least 24 credit hours of post high school transfer credit) take WRTR 1313 if they are transferring in credit for one Freshman Writing course. Students who are transferring in credit for two Freshman writing courses do not need to take either WRTR 1312 and WRTR 1313 unless both courses were earned as dual credit, in which case, students must take WRTR 1313.
