The Department of Biological Sciences is located in the new 68,000 sq. ft. Dedman Life Sciences Building
, which contains state-of-the-art laboratories, research facilities, lecture halls and conference rooms.
Modern instrumentation includes: a laser-confocal microscope system and standard fluorescence microscopes, an electron spin resonance (ESR) facility, BD FACSCaliber fluorescence-activated cell-sorter, shared facilities (CO2 incubators; biosafety cabinets) for cell/tissue culture manipulations (in addition to that in individual research labs), high-speed centrifuges and ultracentrifuges, as well as tabletop centrifuges, sonic dismembrators, real-time PCR, spectrophotometers, a scintillation counter, and more.
The building contains walk-in cold room areas, incubator and freezer bays,histology area with a cryomicrotome for the automated preparation of tissue-sections, dark rooms and molecular biology-photodocumentation systems, and a Drosophila lab with CO2 workstations, constant temperature chambers, dedicated media preparation area and equipment. Also, the second and third floors contain graduate student/postdoctoral fellow offices and conference rooms, and a computer lab (OSX; Windows) is located on the first floor.
SMU is one of two regional centers for The Southwest Consortium for Anti-Infectives and Virological Research. The University of Texas-Southwestern Medical Center is also conveniently located nearby and many faculty in our department collaborate with researchers at the UT-Southwestern campus, as well as other leading academic institutions and medical centers.
