Co-curricular activities, sports, clubs and organizations, Greek Life and other campus activities and events are key to your success at SMU. They provide strong support networks for new and continuing students and help them build a sense of belonging.

First-generation-specific student organizations

First-Generation Association

First-Generation Association (FGA) is an educational organization which exists to foster a community of people interested in all aspects of being a first-gen student. FGA connects first-generation students by: promoting academic resources, creating a community at SMU that welcomes students from different backgrounds, connecting and creating partnerships with other first-gen students in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. First-Generation M.D

Founded through a collaboration between undergraduate pre-med students at SMU and First Gen M.D. medical students at UTSW, this organization will create a unique opportunity for students to share their experiences thus, fostering a sense of community. First Gen M.D. will provide valuable guidance for undergraduate students who are struggling to find proper resources and mentorship when tumbling through the process of entering medical school.

Through this collaboration, SMU student participants will meet regularly (virtual or in-person) to discuss academics, challenges, career aspirations, etc. Additionally, a variety of workshops and events will take place at SMU. Workshops include but are not limited to MCAT preparation, resources for medical school-specific financial aid, getting started in research, and statement writing. For more information, find and join First Gen M.D. on SMU360.

First-Generation Law Student Association

First-Generation Law Student Association (FGLSA) is a student organization that is led by first-gen law students and for first-gen law students.
Who is a first-gen law student? A law student who is the first in their immediate family to graduate with a bachelor’s degree.

FGLSA is focused on creating a community for first-generation law students. This organization will provide networking opportunities among members and alumni, give professional advice, and create social activities. For more information, find and join FGLSA on SMU360.
