OFFICE OF THE PROVOST

The Office of the Provost has overall responsibility for the University’s educational and research programs. The Office of the Provost is headed by Paul W. Ludden, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs. Provost Ludden serves as the chief academic officer of SMU, overseeing seven degree-granting schools as well as the libraries and other academic programs.

The Office of the Provost also includes the following:

 Associate Provosts Ellen F. Jackofsky, Ellen S. Pryor, and Thomas W. Tunks. Ellen F. Jackofsky oversees faculty personnel issues and programs for enhancing and supporting faculty; in addition, her responsibilities include the Central University Libraries, Southwest Review, and the SMU Press. Ellen S. Pryor is responsible for educational programs, the Hunt Leadership Scholars, and student academic appeals. Thomas W. Tunks oversees the Division of Enrollment Services (Admissions, Financial Aid, Bursar, and Registrar), the International Center, the Altshuler Learning Enhancement Center (A-LEC), SMU-in-Taos, the President’s Scholars, Dean's Scholars and International Baccalaureate Scholars Programs.  He also chairs the Strategic  Enrollment Management (SEM) Group.   

Associate Vice President for Research and Dean Graduate Studies. This office, directed by James E. Quick, is responsible for supporting and guiding SMU’s externally funded research, including grant applications and management. His office also supports graduate studies at SMU.

Office of Institutional Research. This office, directed by John Kalb, collects data about the university to provide to internal and external constituencies. Ultimately, such data guides decisions relating to the direction and improvement of SMU. Institutional Research also coordinates SMU’s institutional effectiveness reporting.

Finance Office. This office includes John Whaley, who also is responsible for planning at the SMU-in-Legacy campus. In addition, the office includes Financial Officer Anna Bland Aston.

Office of National Fellowships and Awards. This office, headed by Dr. Kathleen Hugley-Cook, helps identify and support students and faculty in seeking national competitive awards and fellowships, such as Fulbrights, Rhodes, Marshall, Guggenheim, and others.

The Biomedical Researchers in Training Experience (BRITE) program, sponsored by SMU and UT-Southwestern’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, allows undergraduate students to study and perform research at both schools.
