Tutoring, Writing Center, Individual Counseling, Workshops, HDEV Classes

For students who may have been away from the classroom for a while, the A-LEC is ready to help you make your return to academics!

Tutoring is designed to complement and support students’ direct contact with professors, and therefore is NOT just for those who find themselves in academic trouble.  The drop-in tutoring services connect you with a knowledgeable person with whom you can discuss the course material, focus on a specific problem, or discuss how to study for a particular course.   A-LEC tutors are SMU students who have excelled in the class and can help you to feel more comfortable with the material.

In the Writing Center, you can work with an English department faculty member on any writing assignment from any class.  Whether you just got the assignment and don’t know where to start, or you’re almost finished and want one more careful eye to help you review your work, or at any stage in between, we can work with you.

Need someone to listen?  Make an appointment with an A-LEC academic counselor who can help you identify your concerns and put together a strategy for success.

Come to a Learning Strategies Workshop if it’s been a while since you were concerned with how to take notes effectively, how to prepare for a test, how to improve your memory, or any of dozens of other academic skills.  Devote an hour to learning a new strategy that can make a big difference.

Consider HDEV 1210- Academic Success and Personal Development.  Many students find that this class offers them a terrific way to identify the skills they have and to build on them, as well as to identify the skills they need in new or more difficult courses. A two-credit graded course, HDEV 1210 is taught by instructors who know the demands of the university curriculum and can guide you to become the most successful you!

We know your commitments and schedule may make it difficult to take full advantage of our in-office resources at the A-LEC, but we encourage you to schedule a one-time “Intro to the A-LEC” session to find out exactly how we can help you. Our Academic Counselor may point you to our online resources for study skill improvement, or provide the hard copy handouts from a particular workshop you’re interested in, if your schedule doesn’t fit with ours. Schedule an appointment and let us know what you need so we can help in the most efficient way possible!
