We are pleased to announce that beginning in the Fall 2014 semester the Department of Statistical Science will offer two Ph.D. degrees: Ph.D. in Statistical Science and Ph.D. in Biostatistics.
Ph.D. in Statistical Science
The Department of Statistical Science began offering the Ph.D. in Statistical Science in 1968. Since that time it has awarded over 170 Ph.D. degrees. The courses in the Ph.D. curriculum in Statistical Science at SMU provide our students with the strong theoretical foundation in mathematics, statistical inference, and probability needed for students pursuing a research-oriented Ph.D. degree. They also acquire extensive experience in statistical applications and practice that will enable them to take leadership roles in innovative uses of statistical science in industry, government and many other diverse fields. The emphasis in the Ph.D. program is on developing fundamental breadth and depth in both theory and applications.
Ph.D. in Biostatistics (New)
Beginning in the Fall 2014 semester the Department of Statistical Science at SMU and the Department of Clinical Sciences at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (UTSW) will partner to offer a Ph.D. program in Biostatistics. The degree will be conferred by SMU, but students in this program will take courses at both SMU and UTSW. Students attain a strong mathematical and statistical foundation such as that provided in the Ph.D. in Statistical Science curriculum, but they will also take courses that prepare them for a research career in Biostatistics. During the third and fourth years of the curriculum, students will work with researchers at UTSW under the joint supervision of one or more SMU faculty mentors.
