The SMU Statistical Consulting Center assists scholars, businesses, and organizations by applying statistical expertise to a variety of data analytics projects. Through this service, experienced faculty members in the Department of Statistical Science and supervised Ph.D. and M.S. graduate students can provide help in all phases of your research or data related project, including:

Selecting a design for a study based on the goals of the research or project

  • Selecting an appropriate sample size for a research project

  • Providing assistance in writing survey questions and creating an appropriate plan for administering a survey

  • Preparing data for analysis for big data (and smaller-size) projects

  • Performing predictive and statistical analysis, and scientific programming

  • Preparing reports, graphs, and tables for presentation or publication

  • When applicable, participating in writing grants or academic papers

You may schedule an appointment with Alan Elliott, the Director of the Consulting Center, to discuss your specific questions. An initial consultation is free. If further consultation is needed, the following fees apply:

For SMU related clients (in house):

                −     faculty consultants, $125/hour
                −     graduate student consultants, $40/hour

For outside projects:

−     faculty consultants, $250/hour

−     graduate student consultants, $80/hour

Fees cover time spent in actual consulting meetings, research time by the consultant, time spent e-mailing or phone consulting, preparation of reports, and travel time for off-campus meetings.

Since consulting projects provide invaluable training opportunities for our M.S. and Ph.D. students, with the client’s approval, some projects may utilize supervised Ph.D. or MS graduate students in the consulting and data analysis process.
