The English as a Second Language (ESL) Program at SMU is designed to assist non-native English speaking students to succeed on the University level.
We offer courses to SMU students from all areas of the University to help you achieve academic success. These courses focus on grammar, writing, listening, speaking, and pronunciation skills, as well as explore American culture, customs, attitudes, and idiomatic use of English.
Not an SMU student? We can still help.
We also offer programs specifically designed for non-SMU students. These programs include the Intensive English Program (IEP), a multi-level year-long program to prepare ESL students and professionals for academic success at the university level, and the Summer Term IEP, a shorter six-week version of the Intensive English Program (IEP).
We look forward to working with you.
John E. Wheeler
Director of the SMU ESL Program
