Our students can major in French, German, Spanish & Italian area studies or Foreign Languages. In addition to these languages, students can earn a minor in Chinese, Japanese, Latin and Russian.
Students are free to explore many dimensions of one or more languages and cultures through a wide variety of authentic materials- from literature and history to films and television & programming.
In addition, the Foreign Language Teaching and Technology Center offers students the opportunity to discover languages through a wide variety of technologies.

38th Annual African Literature Conference at SMU
From April 11 -15, 2012, Professors Dayna Oscherwitz and Herve Tchumkam, with the support of Dedman College, The Embrey Human Rights Program, the Department of World Languages and Literatures, the Department of English, the University Honors Program, and the Scott Hawkins Lecture Series welcome the African Literature Association for its 38th Annual Meeting. The conference brings scholars specializing in African and Diaspora literature, visual and media studies, and cultural studies from all over the world. The theme of this year's conference is Human Rights, Literature and the Visual Arts in Africa and the Diasapora. Keynote and plenary speakers include Mahmood Mamdani, Fabien Eboussi Boulaga, Jean-Pierre Bekolo, Mshai Mwangola, Zaynab Alkali, and Pius Adesanmi. The conference will feature a special, 20th anniversary screening of Jean-Pierre Bekolo's landmark film Quartier Mozart, in the presence of the filmmaker. There will also be live performances from Sona Joberte, Ahaji Papa Sousso, and the local Afro-Carribbean band, Watusi.
