GPA Calculations

Subset GPAs are calculated by using the first grade earned in a subset course, unless that course is repeated under SMU's first-year repeat rule. Courses completed through AP and IB credit are graded as "CR," and have no impact on the GPA. Grades from transfer course equivalents of the subset courses taken prior to matriculation at SMU, will be used in the subset GPA calculation (use grade and credit hours designated by the school at which the course was taken). The cumulative all-college GPA is recorded in the semester that the subset is completed.

Extended Subset

Students must meet both the cumulative and subset GPAs in the semester that the subset is completed. Students who do not meet this requirement may take ACCT 2302, and if they have the required cumulative all college GPA and extended subset GPA (the original subset courses plus ACCT 2302) in the semester that ACCT 2302 is completed, they are admitted to Cox.

Students entering SMU between Summer 2012-Summer 2014 have DISC 1313 included in the subset. SMU students follow the Cox admission requirements outlined in the SMU Catalog for their year of entry.

Declaring a Cox Major

Pre-business students sign a major declaration form with their academic advisor in the semester that they will complete the Cox admission requirements. After grades are posted, the advisor will send the major declaration form and the student's file to the Cox BBA Advising & Records for processing. Students who have already declared a major in Dedman College , the Lyle School of Engineering, Meadows School of the Arts, or Simmons School of Education & Human Development and who would like to add a second major in Cox should complete a Student Change of Degree Program Request and submit it to Cox BBA Advising in 252 Maguire, or email it to bbaadvising@smu.edu.
