The Hegi Family Career Development Center: Where Relationships Matter
Families play an integral role in helping their students navigate their time at SMU and serving as a sounding board as they make plans for their future career. In order to best support your student in today's changing world of work, it is vital for you to understand the career development process, as well as the resources and opportunities available for your student during their journey at SMU. Many students struggle to make a major and/or career decision, build their college resume and LinkedIn, prepare for the internship and job search, or connect with alumni and employers, which is why we need your help to encourage them to start early and visit us often.
At Hegi we believe that understanding your student from a holistic perspective and establishing a strong relationship is essential for facilitating their career development process and preparing them for the world of work. Our team is trained to help your student be intentional in defining who they are and gaining the language to articulate their values, interests, personality, and strengths. At the same time, we help them to gain relevant experience through externships, internships, and connect them with alumni and employers across industries.
Below is a simple checklist that we encourage all first-year students to complete and experience once they step on campus:
Stop by Drop-In Hours:
Hegi staff members are available for 20 minute drop-in sessions every Monday through Thursday from 11-12pm and 1-4 and Friday from 11-1pm and 2-4pm. In these sessions, we start a conversation about your student's career development. We will take the time to get to know who they are, before jumping into the nitty-gritty. Just getting started, have a quick question, or need help transitioning their high school resume to a college version? Drop-ins are a great place for your student to start.
Schedule a Career Counseling Appointment:
Career Counseling appointments are longer sessions with a staff member to help your student navigate the more complex issues of career development. Understanding who they are through exploring interests, values, and strengths and preparing them for their future career with in-depth resume reviews, mock interviews, and developing strategies for the internship and job search, are just a few of the areas that we can help your student hone in on and polish.
Attend Hegi Events and Programs:
Experiential learning is the best way to test out career interests and gain awareness of options. We offer a variety of events and programs to help your student gain exposure to different career paths and connect with alumni and employers across industries. Encourage your student to consistently check the Hegi Website or read the Student Affairs Friday Update email.
Employer Coffee Chats: We collaborate with employers and alumni to offer students an opportunity to hear from people representing a variety of industries and job functions in an informal setting to learn about their career journeys.
Workshop Series: We offer monthly workshops in the career center for your students to connect with staff and prepare professionally, including understanding the essentials of professionalism, resume writing, LinkedIn, interview prep, and networking.
SMU Connection-1 Day Externship: Over winter break we offer a program for your student to shadow an SMU alum for the day in a job or industry that is of interest, and learn about their career journey and what they do on a day-to-day basis.
Career Fair: Gain exposure and learn about the companies recruiting at SMU by attending the bi-annual SMU Career and Internship Fair offered in September and February each year.
Informational Interview: We encourage students to connect and learn from people who are in job functions and industries they are interested in exploring, in order to gain a real world perspective and advice. Encourage your student to talk with a Career Counselor to learn how to connect with the SMU alumni network through LinkedIn.
