Nationally, urban communities are characterized by an amalgamation of class, culture, race, ethnicity, language, and concentrated poverty. The Urban Education 4-course sequence seeks to develop equity-minded, culturally responsive educators who appreciate the historical and social context of urban schools and communities. Moreover, these courses emphasize both theoretical and practical approaches to increasing the academic outcomes of students of color and other socially oppressed populations. Coursework undergirds the intersection of education and community, curricula and students’ funds of knowledge, teacher disposition and student academic achievement, and culturally responsive policies and behavior management.
Courses are tailored for use as electives or a specialization within the Master of Education degree. Students may also take courses as standalone professional development. Offered during evening hours, these courses are designed to accommodate the schedules of working professionals. Courses include:
