Literacy Studies Specialization in either Early or Late Literacy

Literacy is foundational for all learning, and children deserve teachers who are experts in maximizing literacy outcomes across all grade levels and abilities. Our Literacy Studies Specializations offer students an opportunity to advance their knowledge of literacy content, evidence-based strategies and assessment. Throughout the program, students will learn about the current research and then apply their learning in structured practicum experiences as they earn their degree.

Students may choose to complete either an Early (grades EC-4) or Late (grades 3-12) Literacy focus. Each specialization has four required courses:

Early Literacy Specialization (12 hours):

  • EDU 6364. Early Literacy Acquisition I
  • EDU 6367. Early Literacy Acquisition II
  • EDU 6368. Evaluating and Teaching Writing
  • EDU 6389. Literacy Practicum

Late Literacy Specialization (12 hours):

  • EDU 6363. Late Literacy Acquisition
  • EDU 6366. Reading and Writing in the Content Areas
  • EDU 6368. Evaluating and Teaching Writing
  • EDU 6389. Literacy Practicum

Master of Education with Reading Specialist Preparation

The Reading Specialist Preparation Program is available to certified teachers who want to add to their credentials by pursuing the Reading Specialist Certificate while earning their Master of Education. The application to the Educator Preparation Program (EPP) for Reading Specialist must be submitted and accepted for admission to the EPP, prior to TExES test approval and formal practicum.

  • EDU 6367. Early Literacy Acquisition II
  • EDU 6389. Literacy Practicum
  • EDU 6363. Late Literacy Acquisition I
  • EDU 6366. Late Literacy Acquisition II
  • EDU 6330. Literacy Instruction for Students with Dyslexia & Related Disorders
  • EDU 6331. Introductory Course B, Cognitive & Linguistic Structures of Written Language
  • EDU 6368. Evaluating & Teaching Writing
  • EDU 6311. Literacy Leadership & Consultation
  • EDU 6304. Interpreting Educational Research
  • Choose two:
    - EDU 6315. Diverse Learners
    - EDU 6231. Introductory Course C, Early Language Development (taken in combination with EDU 6101 Clinical Therapy Practicum)
    - One Bilingual Course
    - One Special Education Course

Once coursework, 160 practicum hours, and exam preparation are successfully completed, Reading Specialist candidates will be approved to take the TExES Reading Specialist test. After passing the TExES Reading Specialist test and earning the Master of Education degree, they will be recommended for the Reading Specialist Certificate.

Per Texas Administrative Code, for eligibility to receive the Reading Specialist certificate, candidates must:

  • Receive admission to the Educator Preparation Program;
  • Complete the required coursework, including practicum;
  • Successfully pass the TExES #151 Reading Specialist Exam;
  • Have at least two years of classroom teaching experience in a public or an accredited private school; and
  • Hold a master’s degree from an accredited institution of higher learning.
