Non-degree students can take individual master’s level courses in the higher education program for professional development or to familiarize themselves with the graduate program before applying as a degree-seeking student.

Taking a higher education master’s course as a non-degree seeker allows you the opportunity to further your skills and advance your career.  Whether you’re an experienced professional working in higher education or you’re considering a career change, our courses provide you with an excellent opportunity to invest in yourself and acquire new skills.


Our courses are designed for:

  • Recent graduates seeking additional skills before entering the workforce.
  • Experienced professionals pursuing additional knowledge to advance their careers in higher education.

While non-degree students are not candidates for a degree, individuals with interests in higher education may register and engage in coursework or a combination of coursework alongside graduate students without entering a degree program.

  • Non-degree students may register for a maximum course load of 3 credit hours per semester. Individuals will meet with the advisor to discuss availability as some courses carry prerequisites or are limited to degree-seeking students. 
  • If subsequently admitted to the Master’s of Higher Education program as a degree seeker, students may have up to 6 credit hours of coursework earned as a non-degree student, including grades, applied to the degree.
  • Once admitted to a degree program, a student is not permitted to register in a non-degree status.If you are interested in taking a higher education course as an elective course for your current degree program, please schedule a Meeting with the Director.
  • Be sure to check your eligibility for financial aid.
  • Non-degree students do not qualify for graduate assistantships on campus.
  • Students should schedule a Meeting with the Director prior to applying to confirm that the courses of interest are available and open to non-degree students.
