Nancy Vincent Montgomery began teaching in the Annette Caldwell Simmons School of Education and Human Development in January of 2008. She serves as a clinical assistant professor, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) methods courses.
Her career in education has included teaching in Illinois, Texas, and Jakarta, Indonesia and serving as an administrator in the areas of reading and curriculum. Before coming to Southern Methodist University she served as program coordinator of ESL special projects at Region 10 Education Service Center.
Dr. Montgomery's research interests include assessment and the English language learner, literacy and the refugee child, Dyslexia and the English language learner, and Adult ESL Literacy.
Dr. Montgomery's degrees include a Bachelor of Science from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois, a Masters in Public School Administration from University of North Texas, a Masters in Elementary Education from Texas A&M, Commerce, Texas, and a doctorate in Curriculum and Instruction from Texas A&M, Commerce, Texas.
She has been honored at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Illinois with the Nancy Vincent Montgomery Education Scholarship Endowment that awards scholarships to future teachers in Illinois.
Dr. Montgomery is a presenter at national and international conferences on topics relating to English as a second language especially in the area of literacy.
Her community and international service revolves around adult literacy, working with groups concerning refugee and newcomer issues, and global literacy.
Dr. Montgomery has authored numerous works on ESL and ELL education on the primary and secondary levels including the Teacher's ELL Handbook, Strategies for the English Language Learner, Biology (Pearson-Prentice Hall), ESL and the Secondary Student, ESL and the Middle School Student, as well as various articles for the adult ESL learner.
