University Foundations

University Foundations courses help students as they develop the academic, personal, leadership, or financial skills necessary to effectively acclimate to the SMU campus and community. Many of these courses connect students with pre-existing learning communities, such as the Hilltop Scholars Program, the Hunt Leadership Scholars Program, and the Rotunda Scholars Program, in order to enhance the blend of students’ curricular and co-curricular experience.

Many University Foundations courses satisfy difficult-to-achieve Common Curriculum requirements such as the Community Engagement tag, Writing tag, and Civics and Individual Ethics tag. You can search for our courses and their associated tags through the Common Curriculum Course Search. You can also find more information about all of our courses in the SMU Course Catalog.
