Landscape society honors SMU for campus beauty
SMU campus wins award for beauty from the Professional Grounds Management Society.
BALTIMORE — The Professional Grounds Management Society (PGMS) has recognized SMU with an Honor Award in the Society's 2012 Green Star Awards competition.
The award, presented October 26, was given in the Urban University Grounds category for exceptional grounds maintenance.
The PGMS salutes grounds superintendents responsible for maintaining a well-manicured landscape year round. Awards are offered in 15 categories, covering all types of private, public commercial and industrial landscapes.
SMU maintains 232 acres, including four LEED landscapes which are irrigated with reclaimed water. Ornamental grasses such as Regal Mist Muhly and dwarf Pampas grass are selected for being drought tolerant and over 3,000 bulbs and tubers are planted each year for color accent. Bermuda grass is the predominant turf in summer and then overseeded in the fall to keep the turf green year round.
The Green Star Awards program brings national recognition to grounds maintained with a high degree of excellence, complimenting other national landscape award programs that recognize outstanding landscape design and construction.
