Services for Persons with Disabilities

Fondren Library is committed to providing resources for students with disabilities, creating open dialogue in order to better serve all users, and increasing access to low-distraction study spaces, assistive software, and any other Fondren Library resources not listed here.

 

Building Maps

Building maps are located at the Fondren Library Main Desk entrances. The map details each floor, including study room locations, restrooms, elevators, stairs, call numbers. The map is color-coded to denote the three sections of Fondren Library (Red, Blue, and Gray) for easier navigation.

 

Entrances

There are five first-floor entrances to Fondren Library. The Fondren Main Desk entrances are handicap accessible and have automatic doors.

In Fondren Library Gray, there is an entrance from the Laura Bush Promenade into the Collaborative Commons, an entrance facing Dallas Lawn, and an entrance facing the Hughes-Trigg Student Center.

 

Elevators

There are three elevators in Fondren Library:

  • Red Elevator to access Red 1, 2, 3, and 4,
  • Blue Elevator to access the Blue 1, Mezzanine and Blue 2
  • Gray Elevator to access Gray 1, 2, and 3.

 

Restrooms 

Unisex Restrooms Available on SMU Campus

First floor:

Fondren Main Desk area, there are two ADA-compliant single access restrooms.

Fondren Red, there are men’s and women’s restrooms, each with one handicap stall.

Fondren Blue, there are men’s and women’s restrooms, each with one handicap stall.

 
Second floor:

Fondren Gray, there are men’s and women’s restrooms, each with one handicap stall.

Fondren Red, there are men’s and women’s restrooms, each with one handicap stall.

 
Third floor:

Fondren Red, there are men’s and women’s restrooms, each with one handicap stall.

Fondren Blue, there are men’s and women’s restrooms, each with one handicap stall.

 
Fourth floor:

Fondren Red, there are men’s and women’s restrooms, each with one handicap stall.

 

Study Spaces

For a list of low-distraction study spaces (group and individual) in Fondren Library, go the Places to Study page and filter by Quiet. You can reserve a room up to two weeks in advance.

Software & Technology

 
Kurzweil’s Firefly

On all computers in Fondren Library. Kurzweil reads digital text aloud, including the internet, translate texts into any Google-supported language, and includes organizational tools (text highlighter, talking spell checker, note-taking capabilities, and a dictionary). SMU students can contact Fondren Library Main Desk staff or the Ask Us service for assistance creating an account.

 
Zoom Text Screen Magnification, JAWS Screen Reading Software, and Dragon Naturally Speaking Voice-to-Text Software

On three computers in the Fondren Library Learning Commons. Contact the Main Desk to access these computers. 

 
Braille Embosser  

Prints text into tactile braille cells for SMU students. Located in Fondren Library Blue Room 131. Contact the Main Desk for help.
