The DeGolyer Library is open to all qualified researchers. While our collections are designed primarily to meet the needs of scholars and advanced students, the library is open to undergraduates and to visitors not affiliated with Southern Methodist University.

An appointment to use the collections is not required, but it is advisable to let us know that you plan to visit the library. If you already know what materials you wish to research, we can retrieve those in advance of your arrival, which will save you time. If you need assistance, members of the DeGolyer Library staff are familiar with the particular strengths of the collections, and they are prepared and willing to consult with researchers and make suggestions about materials. Library materials are non-circulating and may only be used in the Reading Room. To access the reading room, all researchers must register at the front desk by completing an Application for Use of Special Collections Material Form and providing a current photo ID such as a student, faculty, or staff ID card issued by a university or college, a driver’s license, or passport. By signing this form at registration, researchers agree to follow all reading room policies.

Digital cameras are allowed in the Reading Room. Researchers who plan to use a personal camera must inform staff that they intend to take photographs in advance and must also adhere to the Digital Camera Use Policy. Photographs taken by researchers may be used for personal study only. Images for publication or distribution must be ordered through Imaging Services and Permissions.
