SMU Libraries’ ability to keep our buildings open to the SMU community relies on every Mustang adhering to the responsibilities agreed to in the Pledge to Protect Our SMU Community and the following guidelines. If you are not willing or able to help us by following the standards and protocols outlined below, we ask that you refrain from visiting the libraries. Failure to comply may result in a report to Student Conduct and Community Standards.
Bring your SMU ID for entrance
Library buildings are only available to SMU faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students. Present your SMU ID to library staff when entering the library. Guests may not enter at this time.
Use only designated entrances and exits
Entrances and exits may be closed or labeled with one-way directional signage to encourage safer traffic patterns.
Face coverings are required at all times
SMU is requiring that everyone on the SMU campus wear a face covering over the mouth and nose in all public indoor spaces.
Consume food outside of the library
For the safety of all patrons, no food is allowed in any library. Beverages with lids are permitted if consumed while maintaining facial covering when not actively drinking.
Maintain appropriate physical distance
Stay at least 6 feet away from others whenever possible.
Wash hands with soap and water frequently
Wash hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
Sanitize your workspace before and after
For everyone’s protection, clean shared tables, chairs, or equipment before and after use. Sanitizing stations with disinfectant spray or wipes are located throughout library spaces.
Sanitize printers and scanners
Spray disinfectant on towel and wipe printers and scanners before and after use. Request staplers, hole punch, and other supplies at the desk.
Leave library furniture in its original location
Library furniture has been moved to adhere to physical distancing guidelines. Do not relocate tables and chairs.
Sit in designated seats marked with “Please sit here” sign
Red, circle signs have been placed on tables and chairs where seating is allowed.
Study room reservations
Study rooms, referred to as “Zoom Spaces” across campus, must be reserved. Adhere to the occupancy limits posted for each study room. You may keep the door open to improve ventilation in the study room.
Return library materials to the appropriate location
Return checked out materials to any book drop location on campus. While browsing, do not return books to the shelf. Place unwanted books in the quarantine boxes throughout the library stacks.
The SMU Libraries is offering fully virtual reference services in order to reduce face-to-face contact for extended time periods. Schedule virtual appointments with a librarian or ask us your question through email, chat, phone, or text.
