Response to COVID-19

You may notice the Libraries look a little different. But you’ll still have the same great service from the SMU Libraries that you know and love.  Have concerns? Contact the main desk at your library.

Building Access

Access to buildings when they reopen will be limited to current members of the SMU community with an active SMU ID.

Face Masks Required

Per SMU requirements, everyone who enters a building is required to wear a face mask.

Reduced Occupancy

  • We’ve reduced the amount of furniture to comply with social distancing guidelines and Dallas County occupancy restrictions. 
  • Some restrooms will be limited to one occupant at a time.  
  • Study rooms will be available by reservation, but with reduced capacity limits.

Increased Cleaning and Disinfection

  • Libraries will have enhanced cleaning of public spaces throughout the day.
  • Please clean your computer equipment, chairs, and tables, before and after use.
  • Hand sanitizer and disinfectant spray or wipes will be distributed throughout our spaces.

Materials Handling

  • You are welcome to browse.  If you pick up an item and don't check it out, place it in the designated boxes. We will move these items to quarantine. 
  • All returned items will be quarantined for 48 hours.  They will appear on your account while they are quarantined, and the return date

    will be updated once they are checked in.

Starbucks

Starbucks in Fondren Library is open. Ordering online is encouraged, and orders are picked up near the counter.  No self-serve food is available. 

New Signage

Signage has been added to inform patrons of new procedures, including:

  • Social distancing
  • Social etiquette reminders (covering coughs, frequent hand washing, etc.)
  • One-way directional signage
  • Contact information for cleaning needs
  • Room occupancy limits

Off-Campus Access to Library Resources

A vast number of books, articles, and other materials are available online through the SMU Libraries. 

  • Visit our Research Guides for subject-related database recommendations.
  • Visit the Libraries' A-Z Database List to search for a database by title.
  • Frequently Asked Questions about online and off-campus access.
  • If you need an article or book chapter that is not available online, request a copy from our Interlibrary Loan/Document Delivery service. Staff members will scan an item from our print collections or get a copy from another library, then deliver it to you online.

Physical Collections

Checking Out Items

Show your ID card at the service desk. You will be provided instructions on how to check out items.

Course Reserves

Due to the short loan periods and related safety concerns, this service is not available.  We will work with faculty members to identify online alternatives.

Equipment

There will be some limitations on equipment availability.  All equipment will be held in quarantine and sanitized after check-in.

Returns

  • Borrowed items can be returned at any book drop box.  For safety reasons, returns will not be accepted at service desks. 
  • All due dates for materials currently on loan from SMU Libraries will be extended and fines and fees will be suspended until September 30, 2020.

Requests

In Library Search, you can place item requests (see instructions). 

Delivery Options
  • SMU students, faculty, and staff can choose from service desk pickup, curbside pickup, or home delivery.
  • Alumni Card holders, Research Card holders, and Friends of the SMU Libraries can request curbside pickup only. 
  • No other cardholders may place requests at this time.
Curbside Pickup
  1. Place items on hold in Library Search (see instructions).
  2. You will receive a notification email within 48 hours.
  3. Make an appointment for pickup using the link in your notification email.
  4. Pick up your items at the owning library.  Return them to any SMU Libraries book drop box, or ship them to the owning library.

Home Delivery
  1. Request items in Library Search.
  2. Select Personal Delivery: Home Address.
  3. You will receive a notification email within 48 hours.  You must reply to confirm or correct your shipping address.
  4. Your items will be shipped via UPS and will typically arrive 7-10 days later.  Return them to any SMU Libraries book drop box, or ship them using the prepaid address label enclosed.

Libraries staff are available to answer your library and research questions through our virtual Ask Us service.

 

Consultations

Librarian consultation appointments will be conducted online via Zoom. Find your subject librarian and easily book your online appointment.  In-person consultations are not being offered at this time.

Online Workshops

Sign up for online workshops or request a workshop for your course.

Other Campus Resources
