M.F.A. in Acting

The M.F.A. Acting Program at Southern Methodist University seeks to prepare serious, dedicated artists for a life in the profession. The curriculum combines broad-based and inclusive actor training with rehearsal and performance of classical, contemporary, ensemble-based and self-created works. Our unique relationship with the award winning Dallas Theater Center provides students with the ability to collaborate with artists of national and international stature.

M.F.A. in Design

The first year of study includes extensive classroom projects and the development of foundational artistic and collaborative skills in scenery, costume and lighting design.

The second year allows for flexibility and personalized instruction. Classes are kept small and select. Students may choose to study one or two areas of design. Regardless, you will receive three years of training in your design area.

The third year we prepare you for the professional world. This is the transition year from student to young professional. Students work with companies that include, the Dallas Theater Center (LORT), Dallas Shakespeare, Kitchen Dog Theatre, Dallas Opera, and Undermain Theatre. The design faculty maintains strong ties to many national theatres that also provide opportunities.
