Graduate students at SMU have the opportunity to work with a large group of internationally recognized researchers in Applied Mathematics, Numerical Analysis, and Scientific Computation. The mathematics department offers quality teaching in small classes. Teaching Assistantships are available for both the M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs (includes a stipend plus full tuition waiver).
Current research includes numerical analysis of partial differential equations, parallel computing, mathematical software, dynamical systems, asymptotic methods, functional differential equations with applications to areas such fluid dynamics, electromagnetics and optics, pattern formation, oscillators, nonlinear waves and mathematical biology. See back for faculty research interests.
Our Master of Science degree in computational and applied mathematics requires 11 courses and can be completed easily within two academic years by taking the normal load of three courses per semester. In the first semester, graduate students enroll in three courses: advanced differential equations and dynamical systems, partial differential equations, and numerical analysis . The courses in the M.S. program are designed to prepare students for industrial employment, doctoral work in our department, or further graduate work in a variety of other disciplines.
Our Ph.D. degree in computational and applied mathematics requires an additional year of course work beyond the Master's level to prepare for a Ph.D. qualifying exam. Some students need three semesters of course work if their Master's degree is from an institution that is not as focused as is our program on applied mathematics, numerical analysis, and scientific computation. Following successful completion of the qualifying exam, it takes about two years to write a research dissertation.
