Course Offerings

SPAN 2421: Intermediate Spanish I for Heritage Speakers - An intermediate course designed for Spanish heritage speakers with limited formal exposure. Develops foundational oral, writing, and reading skills by building on existing linguistic resources and cultural background.

SPAN 2323: Intermediate Spanish II for Heritage Speakers - An intermediate course for heritage speakers with limited formal exposure to Spanish. Building on their linguistic and cultural backgrounds, students develop academic and linguistic skills through critical, culturally relevant projects.

SPAN 3359: Advanced Spanish for Heritage Speakers - Specifically designed for Spanish-English bilingual students who learned Spanish at home in the U.S. and who have oral proficiency but little or no formal training. Students reactivate their Spanish and develop it further to learn more about their language and cultural heritage, to acquire Spanish literacy skills, and to develop or expand their Spanish academic language skills. Prerequisites: C- or better in SPAN 2323 or the appropriate placement exam score. Students meeting these requirements will be able to enroll. Otherwise, approval from the WLL adviser is required for enrollment.

Courses of Special Interest for Heritage Spanish Speakers

SPAN 3356: Culture and Communication for Spanish Speakers - An advanced course intended primarily for bilingual students whose home language is Spanish but whose dominant intellectual language is English. Because of its emphasis on cultural readings and communication skills, the course if suitable for native speakers who would like to broaden their knowledge of the language, Hispanic culture, and the major Hispanic groups in the U.S. Prerequisite: C- or better in SPAN 3359.

SPAN 3375: Topics in Spanish-Speaking Communities in the United States - A survey of social and cultural issues surrounding Spanish-speaking communities in the U.S. that highlights selected topics. Prerequisite: SPAN 3359 (or can be taken concurrently) or C- or better in SPAN 3358.

SPAN 4329: Conversations and Community - Advanced Spanish course that brings oral and written language to the center of students’ learning by bringing them in contact with native Spanish speakers from a variety of Dallas communities. Includes fieldwork and contact hours in the classroom. Aimed at improving oral and listening skills. Prerequisite: C- or better in SPAN 3358 or SPAN 3359.

SPAN 4305: Spanish and Spanish Speakers in the United States - Examines the sociolinguistic dynamics of Spanish in the U.S., exploring its history, variation, language contact, identity, and language policies, with a focus on U.S. Latinx communities and bilingualism. Prerequisites: C- or better in SPAN 3358/SPAN 3359 and one of the following: SPAN 3310, SPAN 3311, SPAN 3312, SPAN 3313, SPAN 3355/SPAN 3356, SPAN 3373, SPAN 3374, SPAN 3375, or instructor approval.
