Mustang Alums To Meet In Super Bowl LVII

Feb 6

DALLAS (SMU) – When the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles square off in Super Bowl LVII on Feb. 12, the Mustangs will be represented by a pair of football letterwinners in Grant Calcaterra and Shane Buechele as well as SMU soccer letterman and prominent business alum Clark Hunt.

In his rookie season, Calcaterra has seen action in 15 games making two starts. He has five receptions for 81 yards, including a season-high two catches in the week 14 win against the Giants and a season-high 40 yards in the week three win over the Commanders. The Eagles defeated San Francisco 31-7 in the NFC Championship and are looking for their second Super Bowl Championship in franchise history. In his lone season with the Mustangs, Calcaterra started all 12 games in 2021, registering 38 catches for 465 yards and four TDs. He was named second-team All-American Athletic Conference, invited to the NFL Combine and Reese's Senior Bowl and was a member of the Mackey Award Watch List. He was selected in the sixth round as the 189th pick by the Eagles.

Buechele is in his second season with the Chiefs after signing as an undrafted free agent with the franchise and being promoted to the active roster in November 2021. He started all 23 games in his time on the Hilltop and was named a Senior CLASS Award Second-Team All-American and was a finalist for the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award in 2019. Buechele was also a semifinalist for the Maxwell Award and Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award.

For nearly two decades, Hunt has been with the Chiefs leadership, helping the club to playoff appearances in each of the last eight seasons, including five consecutive AFC Championship appearances, a Super Bowl win in 2019 and a Super Bowl appearance in 2020. Hunt played soccer for the Mustangs from 1983-86 and graduated from SMU's Cox School of Business in 1987 with a degree in business administration. A member of SMU's Board of Trustees, he was honored in 2004 as an Outstanding Young Alumnus by the Cox School and, in 2018, as a Distinguished Alumnus. He is only the third alumnus in SMU Cox history to receive both honors. Hunt was a two-time Academic All-America selection by the College Sports Information Directors of America and served as captain for the nationally ranked Mustangs. From 1983-86, SMU won 52 games and made four appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
