About the Graduate Assistant Experience


The Graduate Assistant Experience within the Division of Student Affairs exists to provide practical application in the field of higher education to either directly relate to a student’s course of study or to help them develop transferable skills to other career paths. Each assistantship is designed to focus on three ACPA/NASPA competencies and contain solid learning outcomes and concrete deliverables at the end of each year of their experience. Graduate assistants serve a critical role within the division helping to support and lead programs and initiatives within various departments. We view graduate assistants as part-time para-professionals who have the same quality and contribution expectations as full-time staff with the flexibility in scheduling and workload in recognition as their student status. 

As a division, we strive to provide real-world experiences and opportunities for graduate students including creating professional development plans, supervisor one-on-one meetings, attendance at regular staff and division meetings, and some opportunities to sit on departmental, division, or university committees. Overall, we strive to help graduate assistants connect their academic coursework to their practical experiences and how those items work in tandem to further understand and work toward their professional aspirations.

Application Process

Initial preference is provided to the Simmons School of Education masters students in Education Policy and Leadership. Each February, admitted students are invited to attend Preview Day and interview for positions across the university. After March 1, vacant positions are open to graduate students across SMU and are available for application on a rolling basis. We will post the online application at that time.

Graduate Assistant Experience Committee

Graduate Assistants are an essential part of functioning as a lean division within the institution and as a school with a graduate program in higher education, it is essential to have a strong partnership. With that, this committee is charged at looking holistically at the graduate student experience within our division and how we can better prepare future student affairs educators within our various departments and programs. The goals of the committee are to streamline the assistantship request process for departments, create consistent expectations for graduate assistants and supervisors, to develop more meaningful performance and experience evaluations, and to create a professional development program for graduate assistants. This committee is in partnership with the Simmons School of Education.
