Residential Commons Room Selection

Room Selection for Residential Commons for 2019-2020

The criteria for room selection priority in the Residential Commons has been revised by RLSH and approved by the residential Assembly for more consistency across campus and to encourage rising juniors and seniors to live on-campus again. If you have any questions regarding the priority system, please see your Residential Community Director or Commons Council president.

RC Room Selection Basics

  1. You must reapply for housing first.
  2. Two options:  "Same Room & Roommate" OR Room Selection in your RC
  3. Singles are not available during "Same Room & Roommate"
  4. Roommates must request each other when reapplying, and only one roommate may be requested.
  5. If your requested roommate is in a different commons, this selection page does not apply to you. Please see Roommate in Different Commons.
  6. Students who do not have a roommate:  only juniors and seniors may select a room without having a roommate. Others who select a double room alone, will be moved within the building by RLSH.
  7. RLSH reserves the right to consolidate residents without roommates in order accommodate the incoming first year class.

Same Room & Roommate

Current commons residents may sign up for their same double room only. This time period is one day only.

  • The only room you will see is your currently assigned space.
  • Each roommate must select their own room.
  • Timeslots do not apply during "Same Room & Roommate"
  • Selecting in "Same Room & Roommate" means you are not able to select a different room later. Students who want to see if a different room is available will need to wait until their timeslot during general Residential Commons Room Selection (below)
  • Students who select a room without a roommate may be moved by RLSH.

Room Selection Waves

Current commons residents sign up for a room in waves as shown below. This time period is two days.

  • Every resident who reapplies will be given a date and time in the wave that applies to them.
  • You will see any available room in your commons, single or double.
  • Roommates must be in same commons
  • In a roommate pair, the roommate with the earliest time will be able to "pull in" and assign their roommate at the same time. (Roommates must be requested when reapplying for this to happen.)
  • Residents selecting a room without a roommate may be "consolidated" by RLSH.

Other Information about Selecting in Your Residential Commons

Wave timeslots: Your specific day and time for log in is sent to your student SMU email address. You may log in at your time slot, or afterwards. Your time slot will be based on the sign up waves for the residential commons.

Available rooms: You will see all the rooms available for selection.

  • If you don't see a specific room, it is not available.
  • Singles are not available during "Same Room & Roommate."
  • Rooms designated for ADA assignment are not available during room selection.

Selecting a Double Room:  Roommates may select a double room together, using the earliest time slot between the roommates. The roommate with the earliest time will "pull" their requested roommate into the room. Sophomores who pick a room without a roommate will be reassigned by RLSH.

Single rooms:  Single rooms are on a "space available," first come, first serve basis only. Singles are not available during "Same Room & Roommate" selection.
