2019-2020 Cohort

 

Hana Alford is a senior from Colleyville, Texas. She is majoring in Dance Performance and Business Management with a minor in Musical Theater. Hana enjoys serving her sorority Chi Omega as the Vice President and being involved on the ownership team for STUMO. She is passionate about integrating faith and dance, spending time with her two younger brothers, and adventuring with her friends.

 

 

 

Faith Barnes is from Dallas, Texas who is majoring in Religious Studies with a minor in Philosophy. She is an active member of Sigma Phi Lambda on campus and attends the Hill here at SMU which is the baptist student ministry. Faith loves traveling and has studied abroad in Austria spring semester of her sophomore year as well as spent this past summer on a mission trip in Southeast Asia.

 

 

 

Ashlyn Bartel is a junior transfer from Oklahoma Baptist University. She is pursuing a Psychology major and am involved in Watermark Community Church, serving every Tuesday in The Loft AV shelf. She enjoys studying psychological health and savvy self-care tips and how they can enhance our spiritual experiences. She also loves to travel - whether it's on a mission trip or just exploring the world, she enjoys learning about creation and meeting new people.

 

 


Laura Bell is a senior from Indialantic Florida, studying Mechanical Engineering and Math, but don’t hold it against her! She enjoys running, reading, and adventures (particularly ones that involve being outdoors). Laura is an active member of the Wesley House, and attends HPUMC, where she also serves as a high school bible study leader. She is also an RA in Boaz Commons and a member of Delta Gamma Sorority. Laura is passionate about SMU, the environment, Publix, people, discipleship, and Jesus!

 

 

 

Camille Bourgeois is a sophomore from Houston, Texas whose faith fuels various artistic and scientific pursuits, including dance and potentially medicine. Wesley House, HPUMC’s college ministry, provides leadership platforms and helps her remain rooted in her faith. In addition to Wesley, she is Vice President of Students for New Learning, an active member of Alpha Chi Omega, serves abroad with MedLife, and a recruitment chair for Dance Marathon.  Off campus, she remains connected with the community through volunteering and the arts and dances in a modern dance company.

 

 

 

Julia Bugos is a senior from Cypress, TX and majoring in Marketing and Health & Society. Outside of classes, she is involved with SMU Catholic campus ministry, the Office of Health Promotion, SMU Abroad, and Mustangs for Life. She enjoys being active, talking about her semester abroad, and learning any and all fun facts. She is passionate about health and wellbeing and hopes to work in community health after graduation.  

 

 

 

Chase Castaneda is a junior from Kingwood, Texas majoring in Finance with a minor in Religious Studies. He enjoys hiking, camping, hanging out with friends, and playing with his baby sister. Chase is a part of the Wesley House and SMU Catholic ministries on campus, and leads youth groups and confirmation classes back home. Chase is also vice president of Beta Upsilon Chi fraternity and is president of a non-profit organization in Houston. Chase is enthusiastic about learning, helping others, and Bubba’s fried chicken.

 

 

 

Polina DeClue is a Junior from St. Louis, Missouri and is majoring in Political Science and World Languages with minors in Public Policy/International Affairs and Philosophy. Polina is highly involved in her community, through both her leadership position in the sorority, Gamma Phi Beta, and her participation in organizations such as Mustang Heroes and Russian Club. Polina spent her summer interning at a criminal defense law firm and enjoys traveling, reading, and spending time with family and friends in her free time. Upon graduation, Polina hopes to attend law school and go on to practice international law. 

 

 

 

Nick Fontela is a junior from Tallahassee, Florida majoring in Accounting and Spanish. He is involved in both the Wesley House and Catholic Center on campus, and he is also a member and service chair of the Beta Upsilon Chi fraternity. Nick enjoys running and exercising with friends as well as eating at the delicious eating establishments in Dallas!

 

 

 

Dalton Gibson is a senior from Jackson, MS. He is double majoring in Mechanical Engineering and Mathematics while also pursuing his Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering. Dalton is involved on campus in a variety of ways such as leading campus tours as a Student Ambassador, being an active member of the Beta Upsilon Chi Fraternity, and helping plan the All Greek Worship Night. Dalton has a heart for dancing and is a member of the hip-hop dance crew, The Neighborhood. In his free time, he loves to sit in his hammock on Dallas Hall Lawn and enjoy the company of his friends.

 

 

 

Travis Harris is a sophomore from Carrollton, TX majoring in Biochemistry with minors in Statistics and Religious Studies. While pursuing his degree, Travis also works in a research lab on SMU’s campus with hopes of pursuing a PhD after graduation. Travis is a member of Watermark Community Church and serves as a leader within the College Ministry. When not in classes, he enjoys reading, going to SMU football games, listening to music, attending events in Dallas, and spending time with friends.

 

 

 

Sarah Kaiser is a junior from Scottsdale, Arizona studying Computer Science. She is involved in SMU Catholic Campus ministries as their Treasurer. She is also a member of Alpha Chi Omega, a programming chair for Program Council, and a member of Lyle Ambassadors. She is passionate about theatre, basketball, and film. 

 

 

 

Nia Kamau is a sophomore from Little Elm, Texas.  She is double majoring in Human Rights and International Studies with minors in Public Policy and International Affairs, Arabic, and Economics.  She is a member of Impact Church DFW and is a part of the Antioch College LifeGroup, Association of Black Students, Student Alliance Against Human Trafficking, and Boaz Leadership Team.   After completing her undergraduate studies at SMU, Nia plans on attending law school to pursue a career as a human rights attorney.

 

 

 

Libby Kuchler is a junior from Dublin, OH studying Accounting and English. She is actively involved in SMU Catholic Campus Ministry, and enjoys serving on the campus Housing Unification Board and participating in Greek life. Libby likes to explore local coffee shops, read about the lives of holy men and women, and listen to live music. When she’s not in class, Libby can be found lounging on a couch in the Neuhoff Catholic Center or grabbing a bagel at Einstein’s.

 

 

 

Happy Carlock Madden is a Master's in Counseling student at SMU. She also oversees networking and outreach for the Center for Depression Research and Clinical Care (CDRC) at UT Southwestern Medical Center. Happy graduated from Washington and Lee University in 2015, where she majored in Journalism and Spanish. She enjoys serving in ministry with her husband James Madden, who is the Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) campus minister at SMU. After graduating, Happy hopes to work as a mental health counselor on a college campus.

 

 

 

JT Martin is a Computer Science and Mathematics student on track to graduate in 2022. He is a member of Chase Oaks Church Plano, where he volunteers with the Freshman and Senior life groups. In addition, he leads a bible study on the SMU campus every Saturday. Since joining SMU he has been active in CRU and Focus campus ministries. Aside from academics and faith he also enjoys writing, hanging out with friends and gaming on the PS4.

 

 

 

Kyle Mistele is a sophomore from Raleigh, North Carolina. He is majoring in Computer Science, specializing in Cyber Security, and minoring in Philosophy. Kyle is a member of SMU Catholic Campus Ministry, and is an officer on the board of the Thomistic Institute. Aside from school work, he enjoys performing with the SMU Mustang Mavericks and taking an active leadership role in SMU Cyber Security Club.

 

 

 

Johanna Pang, from Rockwall, Texas, is a sophomore majoring in English and Human Rights and minoring in Spanish, Psychology and Law and Legal Reasoning with the hopes of becoming a judge after working as a human rights attorney.  She attends Antioch Church and loves worshipping Jesus alongside friends.  In addition, Johanna enjoys poetry, painting, and trying new foods and activities.  She invests herself in starting a new SEAL chapter at SMU and also creating the Champions University Mentorship Program alongside Nia Kamau, all to empower children in the Dallas community.   

 

 

 

 

Olivia Ramsey is a sophomore from Georgetown, Kentucky. She is double majoring in Dance Performance and English. Olivia is interested in integrating her faith with dance. She enjoys being involved in Dance Marathon and Welsey House and loves seeing shows or taking walks with friends in her free time.

 

 

 

Brandon Serrano was born and raised in the Dallas area. He is currently a senior majoring in Finance. His goal for his senior year is to not only succeed academically, but also to have an impact on SMU students’ faith. He looks forward to doing so by being involved with on campus ministries such as F.O.C.U.S and the CFL program to help him get in touch with like-minded students. Also, in his free time, he enjoys reading and working out.

 

 

 

Sarah Subramanian is a senior Marketing major with a minor in Law and Legal Reasoning. She has lived in many places, but currently calls Garland, TX home. She is currently the secretary for Sigma Phi Lambda Christian sorority on campus and a site leader for Alternative Breaks. She enjoys volunteering and spending time with friends in her free time. She hopes to go to law school after graduation.

 

 

 

Will Traweek is a Junior studying Computer Science.  He transferred to SMU after attending the University of Washington in Seattle for two years, where he was heavily involved with their Reformed University Fellowship chapter.  A native Dallasite, Will is glad to be back and quickly involved himself with the community.   He currently attends Gateway Bible’s Dallas campus, and works as a Data Analyst for Zirtue, a local fintech startup.

 

 

 

Caroline Waters is a Junior from Atlantic Beach, FL. She is double majoring in Dance Performance and Journalism with an English minor. She enjoys editing for The Daily Campus, serving as an RA in Kathy Crow Commons, and being a part of her sorority, Chi Omega. Caroline attends Shoreline City Church and loves worshipping with her friends in the on-campus Shoreline City Connect Groups. She has a soft spot for sunrises, reading, the ocean, and peach ice cream.
