In early 2018, the Hegi Family Career Development Center and the Office of Social Change and Intercultural Engagement partnered to launch the SMU Board Fellows Program; a unique opportunity that allows selected students to serve as non-voting members on the Board of Directors for a non-profit. The program allows students to apply skills learned in the classroom to real-world experiences and make a lasting impact on the community. The first cohort of the Board Fellows Program began in early January 2019 with the appointment of 12 student Board Fellows. Throughout the year, students have attended board meetings, engaged with committees at the non-profit, gained a greater understanding of how the non-profit fulfills its mission and goals, and lent their perspective and knowledge to projects and problems facing the board. This program benefits the students, our non-profit partners, and the university by establishing relationships throughout the Dallas community, bringing awareness to meaningful causes, and highlighting the strengths of SMU students.

What are students saying about SMU Board Fellows?

"I've always enjoyed volunteering and have learned to identify community service opportunities that relate to social issues that I'm passionate about. After working with Achieve DFW, I've realized that there are many different ways to serve my communities." - Alex Porter, Marketing
