An image sensor detects irradiance of the interference pattern on the second scattering surface. Abstract: A system includes a camera and a projector for capturing spatial detail having resolution exceeding that afforded by the imaging optics, and recovering topographic information lost to the projective nature of imaging. The projector projects a spatial pattern onto the scene to be captured. The spatial patterns may include any pattern or combination of patterns that result in complex sinusoidal modulation. Spatial detail such as texture on the objects in the scene modulate the amplitude of the spatial pattern, and produce Moire fringes that shifts previously unresolved spatial frequencies into the camera's optical passband. The images may be demodulated, and the demodulated components may be combined with the un-modulated components. The resulting image has spatial detail previously inaccessible to the camera owing to the band-limited nature of the camera optics. A spatial pattern may also be projected and received by the camera to estimate topographic information about the scene.

Included is the processing of observed noisy speech both in the spatial- and the temporal-domains to enhance the desired signal component speech and an iterative technique to compute the generalized eigenvectors of the multichannel data derived from the microphone array. The entire processing is done on the spatio-temporal correlation coefficient sequence of the observed data in order to avoid large matrix-vector multiplications. Also described is a speech enhancement system having two stages. In the first stage, the noise component of the observed signal is whitened, and in the second stage a spatio-temporal power method is used to extract the most dominant speech component. In both the stages, the filters are adapted using the multichannel spatio-temporal correlation coefficients of the data.

Abstract: A novel micro-optical electric field sensor exploits morphology-dependent shifts of the optical modes of dielectric cavities to measure temporally- and spatially-resolved of electric field with extremely high sensitivity. The measurement principle is based on the electrostriction effect on the optical modes of dielectric micro-resonators (or micro-cavities) and exploits recent developments in optical fiber and switching technologies. The optical modes are commonly referred to as “whispering gallery modes” (WGM) or “morphology dependent resonances” (MDR). By monitoring the WGM shifts, the electric field causing the electrostriction effect can be determined. Different sensitivities and measurement ranges (maximum measured electric field) can be obtained by using different cavity geometries (for example solid or hollow spheres), polymeric materials (PMMA, PDMS, etc) as well as poling the dielectric material.

Project Title: Method and System for Quantification of Cell Death Using an Impedance Based Micro-Fluidic Device
Abstract: Inventors at Southern Methodist University have developed a chip that is capable of non- destructively analyzing single cells. This technology is based on principles of dielec- trophoresis (DEP). This process separates cells based on their electrophysical properties. Dielectric spectroscopy (DS) is used to analyze cellular response within a variety of electric fields. Cellular response will change based on different important biological properties of the cell, like membrane potential or cytoplasmic conductivity. This chip allows the separa- tion and analysis of single cells without destroying or altering them. Cells can be sorted into individual micro-wells based on function, meaning that similar groups can be isolated and studied further. This method is extremely fast, as you do not need to prep the cells before analysis: Rather, you are relying on the intrinsic differences in their electrophysical profiles to separate different, distinct functional groups.
