Research Compliance Training

Investigators and key personnel must complete compliance training prior to initiating research at SMU. We offer training in Animal Research, Human Subjects, Export Controls, Responsible Conduct of Research, and Financial Conflict of Interest.

Training for Graduate Students

SMU Graduate Students must complete research compliance training in the following conditions.

Condition Required Training

An individual on a
IACUC protocol

Animal Research Training is needed prior to entering Laboratory Research Facility (LARC).

PI, Co-PI, or key personnel on a IRB protocol.

Human Subjects Training is needed prior to Institutional Research Board (IRB) approval.

Personnel on a Technology Control Plan

Export Control Training is needed prior to final approval.

Research Assistant (RA) or
Graduate Assistant (GA)

If receiving Federal funding, Responsible Conduct of Research training is required.

Training for Faculty and Staff

SMU Faculty and Staff must complete research compliance training in the following conditions.

Condition Required Training

Submission of an IACUC protocol

Animal Research Training is needed before final approval from the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).

PI, Co-PI or key personnel on an IRB protocol

Human Subjects Training is needed before final approval by the Institutional Research Board (IRB).

Submission of a Technology Control Plan

Export Control Training is needed before final approval from Research Compliance.

Submission of a grant proposal

Responsible Conduct of Research Training and Financial Conflict of  Interest Training are needed prior to submission by the Office of Research and Graduate Studies (ORGS).

Online Training by CITI

Research Compliance training is offered via the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI Program). Training courses consist of 1 - 35 required modules, depending on your situation, and should take 30 minutes to 3 hours to complete. You may stop and resume the courses at your convenience. To begin the training, you may either log in to your existing account or create a new account.
