Southern Methodist University is committed to the safe, legal, and ethical use of biological materials in its facilities. Acting as an agent for the University in regulating work involving such materials, the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) will ensure that Covered Work meets all applicable safety, legal, and ethical requirements.
SMU's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) provides oversight for all research with biohazardous materials conducted by any faculty, staff, and students at SMU. The oversight is based on guidelines set forth by the CDC's Biosafety in Microbiological and Biomedical Laboratories (BMBL), and regulations established through the NIH Guidelines for Research Involving Recombinant or Synthetic DNA Molecules (NIH Guidelines). Details about the IBC and the review process can now be found in the Research Handbook.
We offer guidance for planning your research project. To discuss your specific research plans, please email the Compliance Coordinator or call at 214-768-4204.
