University Curriculum Assessment

To complete your University Curriculum (UC) Assessment, please follow the directions below. There are two methods to submit your assessment reports: within CANVAS, or the older method used over the last 4 years. Directions and helpful links are provided below.

If you need help contact us at assessment@smu.edu.

As of Spring 2017, completing UC assessment is possible in CANVAS for all UC courses. The conventional assessment method is still available, so you choose which works best for you and your class.

USING CANVAS FOR ASSESSMENT

  1. Review the UC Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) assigned to your course.
  2. Choose or create assignments, projects, reports, etc. that challenge students to perform on those SLO(s).
  3. In CANVAS, follow the "WalkThru" guides at the top right of your CANVAS window. Search for "Outcomes" and you will see an option titled, "Pull Outcomes into Your Course." There are 5 walkthroughs designed to help you with the variations you might need. The WalkThru tab looks like this:
  4. Assess your students' work. No need to save files or mess with excel rosters!
  5. When you get your end-of-semester email about UC Assessment, follow the link to answer a few questions so we will know you assessed in CANVAS.
That's it. No saving files. No uploading. No excel documents. Just complete steps 1-5 above, and you're done!

USING THE EXCEL ROSTER AND UPLOADING FILES  This is the method used over the last 4 years.

  1. Review the UC Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) assigned to your course.
  2. Choose or create assignments, projects, reports, etc. that challenge students to perform on those SLO(s).
  3. Save one digital example of the assignment or exam you gave to students for assessment.
  4. Save one digital example of student work that you assessed for each SLO. (For Oral Communication or performance pieces, a 10 - 15 second smart phone video is all you need.)
  5. Using the new UC ROSTER Template attached to the email received, enter your students' names, SMU IDs, and their scores (1-5 scale) for each SLO assigned to your class.
  6. When you receive the end of semester email about UC Assessment, follow the link to answer questions, upload assignment example(s), upload student example(s), and upload the Excel roster with student IDs and assessment scores.

EVEN IF YOU USE CANVAS, YOU MUST ANSWER A FEW QUESTIONS IN THE REPORT.
