For each of SMU’s administrative, academic and student support programs on campus, we also use Program Level Assessment. As a part of the regular strategic planning, university staff of each department determine a set of key Outcomes specific to the mission of that office. They then assess the extent to which the various programs or activities achieve those objectives/outcomes, review the results of assessment findings and plan strategic and continuous improvement.
It's important to know the difference between direct and indirect measures.
Some departments, such as Student Affairs and Engaged Learning will make use of Student Learning Outcomes as part of their student-related programs. First priority is always on Direct Measures of achievement. Indirect Measures may be used to support direct measures but cannot substitute for them.
Use these four handouts to complete University Support Programs Assessment.
