Research Compliance provides compliance training in all of its areas of oversight. Refer to the training matrix below to determine which training(s) you need to complete.

Personnel on an Animal Subjects Research protocol Animal Subjects Research Training is required prior to securing final approval from the IACUC and prior to entering the Laboratory Research Facility (LARC).
Personnel on a Human Subjects Research protocol Human Subjects Research Training is required prior to Institutional Research Board (IRB) approval.
Personnel on a Biohazardous Research protocol Biological Safety Training is required prior to Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) approval.
Personnel on a Technology Control Plan (TCP) Export Controls Training is required prior to final approval of the TCP.
Federally Supported Graduate Student Responsible Conduct of Research in-person seminar must be completed in order to receive funding.
All other students conducting research Responsible Conduct of Research Online Training is strongly recommended.
PI or Co-PI on externally funded research Responsible Conduct of Research Online Training and Financial Conflicts of Interest Training are required prior to award set-up.

Online Training by CITI

Research Compliance uses the Collaborative Institutional Training Initiative (CITI) system to administer most of the required compliance trainings. You will find detailed instructions for accessing CITI training in the Research Handbook.

Human Subjects Research Training for External Personnel

SMU Protecting Human Research Participants course materials and quiz

Research Personnel not affiliated with SMU may study the Protecting Human Research Participants course materials provided by the NIH Office of Extramural Research and complete a proficiency quiz. Trainees must score 80% or better on the quiz to earn credit, and the quiz may be repeated if needed. A completion certificate will be provided by Research Compliance. Training is valid for 3 years and then must be renewed. This option is intended for external key personnel on SMU research involving human subjects.

Office of Human Research Protections

Another option available to research Personnel not affiliated with SMU is the Human Research Protection Training offered by the Office of Human Research Protections. It takes about 5 hours to complete the training. A completion certificate will be generated and must be provided to Research Compliance. Training is valid for 3 years and then must be renewed. This option is intended for external key personnel on SMU research involving human subjects.

Research Compliance may also be able to accept training completed at other institutions. Send any external training certificates to Research Compliance for review.
