Presentation and Publication

The Office of Engaged Learning coordinates multiple opportunities for students to share their research and creative work. Our office also coordinates undergraduate research workshops and other events.

Research & Innovation Week

Each spring, the Office of Engaged Learning teams with the Moody School of Graduate and Advanced Studies to present Research and Innovation Week (previously "Research Days"). Consisting of poster sessions (one for undergraduates and one for graduate students), plus faculty panels and guest lectures, Research and Innovation Week is a fun time to see the breadth of research being conducted by students at SMU.

Fall Research Symposium

Each fall, students in select research and service programs are invited to give oral presentations in a miniature professional conference. The programs include: Engaged Learning Fellows, Summer Research Fellows, Cooper/McElvaney Fellows, Maguire Public Service Fellows, McNair Scholars, and Richter Fellows.

Presentations are approximately 10 minutes, and visuals (e.g. Powerpoint) are encouraged.

Journal of Undergraduate Research

SMU's Journal of Undergraduate Research publishes original work by SMU's brightest undergraduates. Through a rigorous editing process, including double-blind peer and faculty review, the Journal's student editorial board ensures that each paper is of the highest quality. The Journal acknowledges authors' achievements with both a digital and print edition. The digital edition is hosted on SMU Scholar (scholar.smu.edu/jour) and each paper receives a DOI number that allows other researchers to find and cite it. The print edition is distributed not only to authors and mentors, but also to students, faculty, and staff across the University.

Lab Hopping

Lab Hopping is a twice-a-year event for students to visit open labs and research groups. Faculty, staff, and students in various departments will be on hand to show their research and answer questions.

This is a great way to see what research is happening on campus, and learn how to get involved! Check the Lab Hopping page for the current map and information.

Research Workshops

We offer workshops approximately once a month during the academic year. Often these are coordinated with outside departments, such as SMU Libraries. Recent topics include:

  • From Idea to Publication
  • Engaging Presentations
  • Resumes for Researchers
  • Designing Awesome (Research) Posters
  • The Elevator Pitch
  • ELF & ELSA Info Sessions

We are more than happy to present these workshops (or general information sessions) during class time. Please email engagedlearning@smu.edu to schedule a time.
