Douglas A. Reinelt

Associate Provost for Faculty Affairs

Professor Douglas Reinelt became Associate Provost at Southern Methodist University in August 2016. In this position he manages faculty recruitment and hiring, assists the Provost in administering faculty tenure and promotion, organizes general faculty events, and coordinates faculty honors programs such as the University Scholar-Teacher Award and the Altshuler Distinguished Teaching Awards. In addition, he oversees department reviews and leads the annual Department Chair’s Retreat.

About Professor Reinelt

Douglas Reinelt joined the faculty of the SMU Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences in 1983. Previously, he received his B.S. with honors in mathematics and physics from the University of the Pacific and his Ph.D. in applied mathematics from the California Institute of Technology.

At SMU, Professor Reinelt teaches a wide variety of mathematics courses such as calculus, linear algebra, partial differential equations, perturbation methods, and fluid dynamics.  His research focuses on scientific computation and perturbation analysis of free surface fluid problems including fluid dynamics of bubbles and thin films, coating flows, and foam rheology.

He has published dozens of articles that have appeared in journals such as Physical Review Letters, SIAM Journal of Applied Mathematics, Journal of Fluid Mechanics, Physics of Fluids, and the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science and has contributed chapters in Foams and Emulsions and other special volumes. His research has been funded by the National Science Foundation and Sandia National Laboratories during visits to that institution. He is a member of the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and American Physical Society (APS).

He served as President of the Faculty Senate (2015-16) and member of the Board of Trustees (2015-16) and Department Chair (1999 to 2005 and 2009 to 2015) and Undergraduate Director (1995 to 1999) in the mathematics department. He has also served on the Operational Excellence for the Second Century (OE2C) Executive Committee and many other department, college, and university committees.
