Civic engagement is the key to making our democracy ‘glow with justice and shine with beauty’

If there is one thing even dyed-in-the-wool Democrats and Republicans should agree on, it is this: If our 242-year American experiment in self-government is to continue, civic engagement and exercising one’s right to vote must not be privileges for the few but responsibilities for the many.

Nowhere is this truer than in the upcoming May 4 Dallas and Fort Worth general elections for mayor and city council. In the 2015 mayoral election only 6 percent of eligible voters cast a ballot, dead last in a ranking of America’s 30 largest cities. The median age of voters was 62 for Dallas and 66 for Fort Worth.
