As part of the Maguire Ethics Center’s ongoing initiative to mentor the U.S. Military Veterans of SMU student organization, the Ethics Center hosted a Veterans Day event at the flagpole. The Center designed and produced a lapel pin to commemorate and identify the service of the SMU veteran community.

The Ethics Center honored 103 veteran students, faculty, staff, alumni and community members by presenting a lapel pin and a commemorative card that tied the core values of each branch of the service with the recently adopted values statement of the SMU Student Body.

Center Director Rita Kirk and Assistant Director Candy Crespo, with help from Provost Paul Ludden and Colonel Miguel Howe, pinned the veteran students, faculty, staff and community members who attended the event.

The 43rd President of the United States, George W. Bush, surprised 26 SMU veterans with a special meet and greet at the Bush Library immediately following the event. The Commander in Chief that many of these young men and women served under spoke of the honor and courage of service, and continuing the mission at home.
