For 17 years SMU’s Maguire Center for Ethics and Public Responsibility has recognized the importance of public service and ethical leadership in the Dallas community, principally through our annual J. Erik Jonsson Ethics Award.

In February of 1964, Mayor Jonsson gave his inaugural speech where he brought the community together in the wake of the Kennedy assassination to claim a vision that would make Dallas into the city of the future. The “Goals for Dallas” plan, which was the product of a shared vision of its citizens, is directly responsible for the transformation that followed.

On February 6, 2014, 50 years after Mayor Jonsson was sworn into office and the “Goals for Dallas” were conceived, The Maguire Ethics Center hosted a luncheon that honored the impact that the original "Goals for Dallas" have had on our great city.  The Luncheon connected rising and established Dallas City leaders with SMU students and faculty.

The luncheon featured Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings with comments from Walter Humann and Rita Kirk.
