UM Certification Courses

United Methodist Certification Courses

Certification is the United Methodist Church's method of recognizing that an individual has met the required standards for academic training, experience, and continuing study necessary to achieve and maintain professional excellence. To earn certifications, candidates complete five* certification courses and then complete further steps with their annual conference Board of Ordained Ministry in cooperation with the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry. (Additional information about UMC standards and requirements is available from the GBHEM section on certification.)

Perkins School of Theology offers United Methodist certification courses in the following areas:

Christian Education & Children's Ministry

Youth Ministry

Spiritual Formation*

*GBHEM recognizes the Perkins Certification in Spiritual Direction (PCSD) as fulfilling four of five courses needed for UM Certification in Spiritual Formation. Students in the Spiritual Formation track will take one additional course, United Methodist Studies. All other course requirements for this track will be met by completing the Perkins Certification in Spiritual Direction program. The PCSD program has a separate application process from UM Studies and consists of eight hybrid courses that can be completed in three or more years. PCSD class sessions meet three times annually: once in April, once in August, and once in December. Past graduates of the PCSD program who wish to apply for the UM Certification in Spiritual Formation may take the UM Studies course, then proceed with applying for certification through GBHEM. For more information on how to apply to the PCSD program or how to apply for UM Studies, contact the Spiritual Direction office at (214) 768-3664 or

After approval of your application for Certification courses, you will be sent a link for course registration. Both new and returning Certification students must complete the application to register. You only need to complete one application per year for access to all Certification courses offered, including UM Studies.

The United Methodist Certification Courses application will be available beginning August 5, 2019. Registration will open August 21, 2019 via an emailed link.

Note: A special 30% discount is available for students who wish to take United Methodist Certification courses for the purpose of general continuing education or exploring a continuing education track (such as Certification).
