Class of 2013: Perkins Celebrates Degrees and Academic Achievements

Perkins School of Theology held its annual Celebration of Degrees and Academic Achievements Saturday, May 18 at 2 p.m., in the sanctuary of Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas.  The diploma ceremony followed SMU’s Spring 2013 Commencement Convocation, held earlier in the day.

The following degrees were awarded to the class of 2013, which includes graduates from August and December 2012 as well as May 2013:

Master of Divinity: 45
• Master of Church Ministries: 5

Doctor of Ministry: 11

In addition to presentation of diplomas, the ceremony also included presentation of awards to outstanding students. See complete list (PDF).

Of 71 students in the May graduating class, 51 are United Methodists. Other faith traditions represented include Roman Catholic, Episcopalian, Wesleyan, Baptist, Adventist, Disciples of Christ, CME, Unitarian, and a number of students who classify their affiliation as nondenominational.

Graduating students come from a number of different United Methodist Annual (Regional) Conferences, including Arkansas, Kansas East, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Rio Grande, South Carolina, Texas, Central Texas, North Texas, and Southwest Texas.

Other interesting graduation facts about the Class of 2013:

• The oldest graduating student is 66 and the youngest is 23.
• The class has an international flavor, with one M.Div. student returning from internship in Brazil to graduate, and another, from India, as the first to graduate from our D.Min. program in Singapore.

Richard D. Nelson, Associate Dean for Academic Affairs and W.J.A. Power Professor of Biblical Hebrew and Old Testament Interpretation, was the guest preacher.
