Dario Villarreal

Assistant Professor of Engineering
Lyle School of Engineering

Professor Dario Villarreal is the director of the NeuroMechatronics Lab at SMU. His research focuses on the development of hardware and software for bionic legs (i.e., robotic lower-limb exoskeletons and prosthetic legs) that allow amputees and people suffering from mobility impairments to recover their independence.

The long-term goal of his research is to develop technology that creates a cooperative relationship between bionic legs and their users through the involvement of neural signals.

He received his B.Eng. in Mechatronics from Saltillo Tech in Mexico and his PhD in Biomedical Engineering from The University of Texas at Dallas. Dr. Villarreal collaborates closely with the Mexican Consulate in Dallas to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) education within the Mexican-American community in the DFW area through scientific outreach programs.

Dr. Villarreal is fluent in English, Spanish, and French.
