Information on Catholic Diocese of Dallas Report

On Thursday, Jan. 31, the Catholic Diocese of Dallas released a list of priests with credible allegations of sexual abuse of minors since 1950. Two of the priests on the list were identified by the diocese as having been previously associated with Catholic Campus Ministry at SMU, which provides services for SMU students but is not part of the University. Neither were SMU employees.

Michael Barone, identified as a retired priest in the Diocese of Tyler, worked at the Catholic Campus Ministry in 1995.
Richard Johnson, identified as deceased in 2016, was not assigned to the Catholic Campus Ministry but filled in to say Mass between 1969 and 1973, according to the Dallas diocese.

SMU is saddened and distressed to learn of these allegations. The University became aware of them after the diocese released its list to the public. We have contacted the diocese requesting more information.

We share the concerns of the Dallas community for the victims and all who have been affected.

SMU does not tolerate sexual misconduct of any kind. For information about resources and policies, please see smu.edu/sexualmisconduct
