SMU at the Dallas Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade

On Monday, January 18, 2016, SMU will participate for the third year in the annual Dallas Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade and celebration.

On Monday, January 18, 2016, SMU will participate for the third year in the annual Dallas Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. parade and celebration. The mile-long parade begins at 10 a.m. at the intersection of Holmes Street and Martin Luther King, Jr. Boulevard and ends at Fair Park.

Led by the Mustang Band, SMU parade participants will include SMU President R. Gerald Turner; former SMU student leader Charles Cox  ’67, ’75, ’79, who introduced Dr. King when he spoke at SMU 50 years ago; and alumni of SMU’s Civil Rights Pilgrimage.

All campus community members are invited to participate in or watch the parade, and are encouraged to wear SMU red and blue.

Please note: If you plan to participate in the parade, you must park at Fair Park at Gate 7 before 9 a.m. and board a shuttle bus, which will transport you to the parade start. Shuttle buses will stop running at 9 a.m.; please plan to arrive before 8:30 a.m., as lines can be long.

If you are unable to attend the parade, you can watch a live broadcast beginning at 10 a.m. on Channel 5/NBC.

Getting to Fair Park Gate 7 (Intersection of Pennsylvania Avenue and R.B. Cullum Boulevard)

Use DART: Ride the Green Line from Mockingbird Station to the MLK, Jr. Station, at 1412 S. Trunk Ave., two blocks southwest of R.B. Cullum Boulevard and the MLK fairground entrance at Gate 6. To get on the parade shuttle bus, walk to Gate 7, across from the Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School at 1718 R.B. Cullum Blvd. Shuttles to the start of the parade stop running at 9 a.m., and lines can be long.

To Drive to Fair Park: Drive south on Central Expressway (Highway 75) and continue south on Interstate 45. Exit 283A; take the access road to the first light, and make a U-turn under the highway to Pennsylvania Avenue. Turn right on Pennsylvania to Fair Park and enter at Gate 7, at Pennsylvania Avenue at R.B. Cullum Boulevard near the Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, 1718 R.B. Cullum Blvd. Shuttles to the start of the parade stop running at 9 a.m., and lines can be long.

Please note that Martin Luther King Boulevard will be closed for the parade between Holmes Street and R.B. Cullum Boulevard from 7 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
