Kathy Bates & Allison Tolman: SMU & Baylor alums face off for Emmy
Second Thought Theatre co-founder Allison Tolman, a Baylor alum, and Kathy Bates, an SMU alum, have both been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie category.

Second Thought Theatre co-founder Allison Tolman, who described her part in FX’s Fargo as “kind of miracle” to DMN, has been nominated for her first Emmy Award for her acclaimed performance. It could prove a titanic Texas battle between the Mustangs and the Bears as the Baylor alumna will face off against Southern Methodist University alumna Kathy Bates , who has been nominated in the same Oustanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie category for her work in another FX series, American Horror Story: Coven.
This is a first Emmy nomination for Tolman, a Sugar Land native who starred in plays at Second Thought Theatre from 2004 to 2009. She plays Molly Solverson, a small-town Minnesota police deputy in the show, inspired by the 1996 film of the same name.
Bates, who graduated from SMU in 1969, won an Academy Award for Best Actress and a Golden Globe for Misery in 1990, an Emmy Award for playing the ghost of Charlie Harper on Two and a Half Men on CBS in 2012 and has collected a whole bunch more nominations, including a Tony Award nomination for ‘night, Mother in 1983. She picked up her most recent Emmy nomination for playing Delphine LaLaurie in the third season of American Horror Story.
