University of Texas will keep same admissions policies, at least for now

The Supreme Court’s long-awaited ruling on affirmative action changes nothing at the University of Texas at Austin — for now.
“This decision left in place our current admissions process. We will be using it going forward until we hear something to the contrary,” UT President Bill Powers said Monday in an interview.
Experts in higher education law said, however, that selective colleges like UT must be prepared to prove that race is a critical factor to consider in admissions.
“Any university that wants to use race has been put on notice,” said Michael Harris, associate professor of higher education at Southern Methodist University. “You’re susceptible to legal challenge, and the courts are not going to take your word for it.”
