SMU educator and composer receives Charles Ives Fellowship

Each year, the American Academy of Arts and Letters honors more than 50 composers, artists, architects and writers with cash awards ranging from $5,000 to $75,000. This year, one of those awards is going to a faculty member at Southern Methodist University.

Xi Wang, an assistant professor of composition and theory, is one of two national recipients of the Charles Ives Fellowship. The $15,000 award recognizes “two composers of exceptional gifts.” Wang accepted the award at a ceremony Wednesday in New York City.

“I came to the U.S. as a graduate student 10 years ago, with two suitcases, my embarrassing English and a dream,” Wang said. “I am so thankful for all the support and encouragement I have received … and I am very proud to be part of the Meadows School of the Arts at SMU.”

Wang’s orchestral music has been performed by several orchestras around the world. She’s received numerous fellowships and awards. A graduate of the Shanghai Conservatory, Wang holds degrees from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and Cornell University. She started at SMU in 2009. Visit xiwangcomposer.com.
