SMU Update

While SMU is relieved that the situation involving a man occupying a crane at the Residential Commons site is resolved and that the threat of danger has passed, we are saddened by the loss of life that occurred.

While SMU is relieved that the situation involving a man occupying a crane at the Residential Commons site is resolved and that the threat of danger has passed, we are saddened by the loss of life that occurred. We also express appreciation for the collaboration and expertise of the police forces of Dallas, Highland Park and University Park in working with SMU Police. Information on the further investigation of this matter will come from Dallas Police. We also thank members of the University  community for their cooperation in helping SMU and area police to restrict access to the affected area.

Throughout the situation, SMU Police worked to assess any possible threats to campus and to release reliable information as it became available. Reports indicated the individual was not affiliated with SMU.

Upon being notified by police of this situation late Monday morning, SMU immediately took steps to secure the area, bounded by Central Expressway, Mockingbird Lane, Airline Drive and Binkley Avenue. All building managers in the impacted area were notified, and buildings in the area were emptied by police. Campus areas considered at potential risk by police were cleared and closed to pedestrians and drivers.

Because of the Memorial Day holiday Monday, and with no classes in session, only SMU essential personnel and a limited number of student employees, students and visitors were on campus.

The broader campus community was informed via the SMU home page, Twitter and Facebook pages, and through building managers of residential halls.

No student housing was in the affected at-risk areas. Student residence halls and the rest of campus remained open throughout Monday.
