This exhibition in The Elizabeth Perkins Prothro Galleries at Bridwell Library explores religious books specifically written for children and printed in Europe and America between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries.

Included are Bibles and psalms, catechisms, instructional works, moral stories, devotional literature, and hymnals. Authors, editors, and publishers in each of these genres employ numerous strategies involving the choice of text, image, and physical format to engage young readers. Intended both to instruct and delight, these publications provided a foundation for students’ future religious education and faith.

There is no charge for admission to this exhibition or Bridwell Library. An online version of the exhibition is available for the duration of the exhibition.

Perkins School of Theology, founded in 1911, is one of five official University-related schools of theology of The United Methodist Church. Degree programs include the Master of Divinity, Master of Sacred Music, Master of Theological Studies, Master of Church Ministries, and Doctor of Ministry, as well as the Ph.D., in cooperation with The Graduate Program in Religious Studies at SMU’s Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences.
